Svartisen Glacier, Austerdalsisen.

Svartisen (The Black Ice) is a collective term for two glaciers located in Northern Norway: Western glacier (Engabreen) is 221 km2, and Eastern glacier (Austerdalsisen) is 148 km2. The highest mountain top is 1594 meters (5229 ft) above sea level, and the glacier got a thickness of up until 450 meters. Mo i Rana is an excellent gateway to The Svartisten Glacier.

The glaciers lowest point over sea level is only 20 meters! The name Svartisen comes from an old word which signifies the deep blue color of the ice, and the contrast to the white snow on the ice shelf. The Glacier have been a tourist attraction for centuries, and thousands of tourists visit the galcier every year. Cruise ship from all around the world sail into the beautiful fjord (Holandsfjord) so that tourists can experience Engabreen Glacier live and close up.

To visit the Eastern glacier from Mo i Rana you have to drive about 30 km North to Svartisen Lake (on Highway E6). From the west end of the lake there is a marked trail, or you can choose to travel by boat to the glacier. The boat runs only during the tourist season who is from June through August. There is opportunities for tent camping and a cafeteria at the lake.

You can visit the Western glacier from Mel√ły municipality. The glacier is located about 60 km west of Mo i Rana. The trip requires some planning as the road from Mo i Rana to the glacier has two ferries. There is a tourist center situated close to the glacier with a cafeteria and opportunities for accommodation. The glacier is easily accessible and lowest point over sea level is only 20 meters. There is also opportunities for guided tours on the glacier during the tourist season.

Svartisen Research Laboratorium is located deep in the mountains under the galcier. In the Laboratory (200 meters under the ice) the scientists can study the basic glaciology for the glacier. There is also two access hatches from the laboratorium that give the scientists direct access to the galcier from below. This laboratory is truly unique and not found elsewhere.
